"What do you think when you look at this?"
The concept behind Massé Creative has literally been over 30 years in the making. Nancy Masse (owner) spent her childhood playing under the desk of her father, Jean Charles Masse – A Clio Award-winning Commercial Artist and Package Designer, along with her two siblings, John and Andrea.
Jean instilled his creativity and work ethic in all three children:
Andrea – Developed a natural skill for drawing and painting animals and nature. This led to an exploration in soft-form sculpture, which eventually blossomed into her adult career as a one-of-a-kind mask maker. Her work is available in fine art galleries across the nation and is soon to be featured in the Cirque du Soleil giftshop.
John – Well, what can't be said about John? He's a flippin' ROCK STAR! John lives in Las Vegas and heads up Masse Graphics. His work can currently be seen across the nation (He's responsible for all those Sketchers cartoon ads) and online. John's clientele includes Franco Dragone (creator of "Le Reve" in Las Vegas), Paul Mitchell and Sting!!!
Nancy – As the "baby" of the family, Nancy was the only one not born with a silver paintbrush in her mouth. While she was always fascinated with her older siblings' drawings and in awe of her father's work, Nancy gravitated towards communication at an early age. When she was 2, her sister gave up trying to teach her to draw and taught her to read instead. Her brother, while never giving up the attempt to teach her to draw, nurtured her early abilities by having her read out loud to him while he drew.
However, Nancy continued to mimic her siblings' artistic endeavors and completed her first Epic Novel at age 5.
Jean Masse always had time to explain Art theory to his children or page through one of his enormous books with them. Then, sometime in the late 1970s, when he landed the Moosehead Beer account, he started Nancy down her path with one question: "What do you think when you look at this?"
Maybe it was an attempt to gain insight from a child untouched by commercialism, maybe he was bored. Regardless, this began a ritual between father and daughter that lasted until he passed away almost 30 years later. Nancy would sit in her Father's home office and go over his work, offer insights, and learn the finer machinations of the marriage between good copy and design.
So there you have it, the marriage of good copy and design. Innate knowledge of marketing and a strong creative streak… gifts from one who knew it well.
